titanic | not only in the movies.

15 April 2012

i saw this on twitter the other day (via). i can only shake my head in disbelief.
i'm aghast and disappointed that there are people out there who are ignorant of the real events behind the deadliest peaceful maritime disasters of all time.

today marks the 100th year since the ill-fated sinking of the rms titanic in the frigid waters of the atlantic ocean. to commemorate, an aritfacts show is ongoing at the singapore art and science museum (29/10/2012 − 29/4/2012). i would have passed up the chance to view the exhibit were it not for my good friend, who came over for a brief visit. thanks che che. now i consider myself lucky to have dured during my lifetime.

surreal and eerie. these feelings were instantly evoked the moment i stepped into the gallery. extensive recreations of the ship's grand staircase, the hull, the boiler room, the first and third class cabins, the promenade brought back visions of jack, rose and their clandestine affair from the movie adaptation. survivor accounts plus the authentic items recovered from the ship's wreckage - stamps, belts, articles of clothing, letters, perfumes, trunks, jewellery, scarves, bank notes, a toothpaste jar, among others - were haunting reminders that real people perished in the catastrophic sinking.

a life-sized ice wall in the iceberg gallery simulated the subzero temperatures that hastened the death of those who were left afloat. as a filipino, it was interesting for me to note that four-inch thick manila ropes were used to tie the ship's bollards (steel posts) to the pier. who knew that manila ropes existed over a century ago?

to me,  the artifacts presented was one thing, putting a name and face behind those personal items was another. none of the passengers and crew were left nameless. we were each given boarding passes with real passenger names when we first came in. in the memorial gallery were listed the names of the 705 who lived to tell their stories and the 1,523 who perished. among the survivors was my passenger. elin matilda dolck from the the 3rd class cabin. elin was 24 year old from helsinki, travelling to pennsylvania with her husband, pekka, to flee the economic and political oppression of the russian occupation of finland. i wonder if pekka had survived too. i truly wished he did for that fateful day also marked their 3rd month of marriage.

there were more stories told, all equally poignant and sobering. but much is left for speculation.
a century and numerous expeditions thereafter, the mystery behind the titanic tragedy has been solved.
giant ship vs. iceberg. human vs. nature. a tragic reminder that mindlessness sinks us.
we know now how arrogant complacency, blind faith in technology,  and a series of preventable errors claimed the lives of thousands.
may this kind of tragedy never befall human kind again.

10 April 2012

easter bits.

10 April 2012

growing up, i wasn't exposed to western easter festivities like egg hunts, brunches, the easter bunny and the like. where i come from, holy week was a family affair. while other families would hie off to the beach, my mother made sure that my siblings  and i stayed home and joined in the churches' lenten activities. at home, we would watch reruns of the 10 commandments, benhur and other bible stories on tape and whatever lenten specials were shown on tv. this was pre-cable and pre-internet, mind you. and then there were the superstitions that came with the season. my grandmother (bless her soul)  forbid us from laughing and smiling on good friday! we were told to be extra careful not to get wounded as wounds were thought to heal longer than usual. meanwhile, easter celebration started at the break of dawn on easter sunday where we all eagerly awaited the salubong. kids were encouraged to join the choir of angels to serenade the reunion of jesus and mama mary. these are some of my fondest memories of childhood.

this year, we decided to start a tradition of easter brunch with my little family. we'd like for our daughter  to have fond memories of this wonderful celebration of hope. so on sunday, we went to hear morning mass, ate a few easter chocolates at home, then off to brunch. i had planned to organize a mini easter egg hunt but the toddler hasn't fully recovered from her recent bout of flu, so pffft. next year. next year.

**
during the homily, the toddler girl wanted to lie on the pew and was louder than usual. i shushed her and told her to behave. the more i shushed, the more she protested and grew loud. "no mummy, i don't want to keep kwawet (quiet)." the hubs brought her out but she managed to  let out an eardrum shattering "i-don't-want-to-go-out" scream before they were out the door. all eyes were on me. yes me,  the mother who let her toddler misbehave at church. what a shame, i thought. there was nothing else to do but put my best poker face on. oh well.

**
thankfully, brunch at spruce turned everything around. as expected, the place was filled to the brim. we had made reservations so getting seated was not an issue. waiting time for food was longer than  expected. but i tell you, the food was worth the wait. the hubs had their big brekkie (eggs, german sausage, roasted tomato, roasted potato, mushrooms and foccacia toast) with sparkling wine. i had their signature burger. it has got to be one of the best beef burgers here in sg. it had just the right amount of "beefiness."my SIL had banana pancakes with honeycomb butter and blueberry syrup. while we don't usually order a separate dish for the toddler girl, we made an exception and got her the mac n cheese side dish as it had good reviews. luckily she loved it and finished half the serving.

all in all, we had a restful and reflective easter weekend. hope yours was as well.

weekending

04 April 2012

weekend started with a spontaneous trip to the neighbourhood coffee shop. a toast, water in hand and donned in jammies. i say it was one of the best fridates ever.
so, who knew that a pineapple is, in fact, a large berry? you did? good for you. =)

then came saturday. the hubs wanted to check out the htc one regional launch. so we went.
it was a one of a kind experience as we journeyed to paris, new york, and sydney in a matter of minutes! showcased at the launch were htc's newest and most powerful smartphones to date. as an apple fangirl wannabe, i felt a tinge of guilt for being there. but i thought, it was good opportunity to check the competition out. we had kraze burgers and chilli fries here afterwards.

the sun was out and the sky particularly blue on palm sunday. hearing mass was in order while the rest of the day was spent watching this. it was a weekend well-spent.

here's looking forward to a solemn week ahead. a meaningful and reflective holy week to all who commemorate.

26 February 2012
a couple of firsts and then some...

getting artsy. her first time to do this type of art activity. that smile on her face said it all.

so intent. her first time to taste a vanilla milkshake. and yes, she dug in with a spoon.

being silly. bunny ears + kawaii.

more silliness. hiding in plain sight.

hope you all had a great weekend as well!

a walk in the park

07 February 2012

we went strolling at the nearby bukit batok nature park after the long CNY weekend.
lush greens, large reflecting pools, undulating terrains...
there's nothing like a stroll in the park to shoo away the post holiday blues.
just watch out for those falling durians! ouch!

31 January 2012
it's been awfully quiet around here.

*crickets*

no good reason really. i just did a bit of un-blogging. not really unplugging because i'm still active in the other social media platforms :p

i am slowly getting back into the grind.

for starters, here's a peek at some of the events at the tail end of our twenty-eleven.

wicked the musical // the witches of oz were wickedly good! it's worth watching a second time. or third.

home for the holidays // a first for the toddler girl.  quality time with the grannies. rendezvous with the bee. christmas carols at the malls. lanterns and parols. reunions.

a real christmas // part of my beloved hometown was left devastated by typhoon washi/sendong
i saw the aftermath with my own eyes. tragic and heartbreaking. i knew friends from high school who were left homeless. some even lost loved ones. in the wake of the tragedy, everyone sprang to action. it felt good to have helped bring christmas cheer to those who needed it most.

how's that for starters?

10 November 2011

it's been quite busy these past few days.
DIY party preparations for the toddler girl's birthday.
several deadlines and buzzers to beat at work.
loose ends to tie here and there.
boy, do i have a few stories and a ton of photos to share!
i'm not complaining, just saying.
it's all good, really =)
i hope to get back into the swing of things soon!

oh and before i forget, i was over at Amber's last week for her SOS feature.
please hop on over there and say hi! =)

21 October 2011

recently | back to work and other things

21 October 2011

After more than a year's hiatus, I've finally gone back to work. Part-time. I was both anxious and excited about the decision. I wasn't sure how we would all adapt to the change. Especially the little girl. But deep inside I knew that she would somehow adjust better than I ever will.

And she has. Kids are truly resilient. She lets me leave in the morning without a fuss. Kiss and hug bye bye and that's it! No more tears. Make that no tears at all. Amazing, isn't it? Now, it's a different story with me. I get that lump in my throat every time I kiss her goodbye. *sigh*

I am thankful to have a reliable nanny. She's been with my side of the family for a long time. We got her to work for us when I gave birth and was still working full time. That settles childcare for when I'm not home.

+++
Survived the first week back at work! My new role is not as demanding as the one I previously held. I'm really thankful for part-time arrangements. As I've said to June, they are heaven-sent!

With this new change, I have learned to appreciate and value more the  time I spend with my kid. I didn't give it much thought previously since we were together all day everyday. Quality time or QT as we like to call it has a whole new meaning for our family now.

+++
11.11.11. Toddler girl's turning 2 on that auspicious date. That's Veteran's Day for you friends in the US. We're planning a small party for her and her little friends.  We were in Kansas when she turned 1 last year. And daddy wasn't with us to celebrate. So this is really a first for us. I'm really excited. You see, she's been practicing blowing out candles and sings a decent Happy Birthday song. I can't wait to see how it all turns out!

So recently, there's that.

Have a great weekend everyone!

01 October 2011

september's come & gone

01 October 2011

Amid the flurry of recent events; september is just about over.

It has been a month of changes; of taking leaps of faith many times over.
Of job interviews and seemingly never-ending exam preparations.
Of exclusive events and a book reading session.
Of the little one attending her first real birthday event.
Of meeting new friends and exploring local edens.
Of cupcakes and balloons and a magic show.
Of falling ill twice in a row.
Of reminiscing last year's autumn festivities with friends and family.
Of enjoying downtime and spontaneity.
So forward I look on to the coming months
For growth that may come on in leaps and bounds.

life lessons: anything goes

Ode to A Broken Headpiece: The Happier Days

1. A scheduled power interruption in our estate is the perfect excuse to go out and bring the kiddo to an indoor playground.

2. She had loads of fun and I got a much needed work out.

3. Toddlers can grieve. Mine recently has over a broken headpiece.

4. I grieved with her but did not have the heart to snap a photo of her crying.

5. This toddler is also constantly testing our boundaries.

6. She's armed with crocodile tears and whinese! Watch out!

7. Positive reinforcement and redirect. *meditates* Ohmm...

8. In other news, I have learned to install a new commenting system.

9. Disqus! Love it because it makes replying to comments so much easier.

10. But...since I can access and reply to comments from my email account,
I hardly get to visit and comment on my favorite blogs! Not good at all.

11. I. Need. To. Catch. Up.

12. We've been through trying times the past weeks. Not yet ready to talk about it.

13. But things are getting better and plans are slowly falling into place.

14. Grateful for all lessons learned and unexpected blessing received.

How about you? What lessons have you learned this past week?

keep still.

19 August 2011

Day in and day out, we are ever so busy, getting caught up in the hustle and bustle of our everyday things.

At this moment, I choose to keep still and appreciate the simple things.

:: I appreciate that the weather has been less erratic lately. More pool time for the toddler. Yay!

:: I appreciate technology. Even though the rest of my family is scattered all over the globe, we still get to  see  and talk to each other virtually!

:: I appreciate that my toddler is now showing signs of potty readiness. She now asks for the potty on waking up and after bathing.

:: I appreciate my husband for letting me sleep in on weekends.

:: I appreciate Barney. The purple dinosaur is the toddler's current fave.

::I appreciate that my toddler's stroller footrest has finally been replaced. For free.

::I appreciate my Voice Boks friends for their continuing support. You are awesome.

::I appreciate Natalie for the heads up on this linky and  Jesslyn for hosting this. And Bruna for Let's Bee Friends :)

What about you? What are the simple things that you are grateful for?

Let's BEE Friends

11 August 2011

rundown: 21 months.

11 August 2011

Three months shy of your 2nd birthday. Oh how time flies. It's amazing to see how grown you've become. I see you gain more and more confidence as you take on new tasks each day. I won't be surprised if one day I will no longer see traces of the bashful little girl who clings and hides behind mummy. You love to play pretend. Cooking is your main thing now. You'll take me by the hand and ask me to sit nearby while you get busy in your  play kitchen - washing and cooking your veggies and soup blocks. Yes, these same wooden blocks. You'd go around letting me, Ate, and your dolls taste your invisible concoction. You get a kick out of doing this.
Dolly Rose and Elmo are your favorite pretend classmates. You love to show them your doodles and baubles. You love to read them books and teach them songs you learned in play school. You also don't mind sharing your snacks with them. You like to copy everything that we do. From household chores to reading books to anything that we say and everything in between. You are my police. You make me doubly cautious of whatever comes out of my mouth.
Meanwhile, Yumi and Doggie are your bedtime buddies. Plus Binky and Chewy of course. Yes, we have names for all of your thingies. :)

The other day, your Tita called because cousin Iza said she wanted to hear you speak. You grabbed the handset from me; said, "Hello" and listened attentively to whatever Ate Iza was saying on the other end. Your Tita and I ended up talking via handphone.

Your vocabulary never ceases to surprise us. We used to count the words that you can say but you keep adding new words so quickly! We stopped counting at 150. You know your numbers and alphabets albeit sometimes with no chronology. You know the names of all your playmates and even that of their nannies.

The grannies are happy that you know their names already. What's Lola's name? Nona Norms. AND? Nona Baby. How about Lolo? Nono Boy. AND? Nono Manny. Yipee! It goes without saying that you know your name and age and our names too! :)

You love making faces. This is you in your "tickle me, surprised, fishy and happy face!" You also have the angry, sad, bored and scared faces. You like singing silly songs and rhymes.

"Sweetly sings the donkey at the break of  day. If you do not feed him, this is what he'll say: hee haw, hee haw, hee haw. And you scramble on to mummy's back. Hee Haw. Hee Haw. And stop. "

You seem to know how to empathize.

The other day, we let you watch snippets of Strawberry Shortcake on the telly. You bawled your eyes out when Mr. Longface Caterpillar fell from a cliff! Daddy and I were stifling our laughters while we were trying to comfort you!

We always take photos for daddy, while he's at work. You don't mind posing at all. Sometimes you even want to change footwear in between poses. See!

I would love for you to stay this way, little one. But that's not how it should be. You are meant to grow, to explore, to blossom, to be who you are meant to be. Though bittersweet,  I will be content with remembering how you are as this little toddler girl.
